🪲 The Last Firefly
A story about light in the darkness.
The Story
The fireflies are gone. All of them. Except one. In a world where fireflies provided the only light in the darkest hours, their disappearance has plunged the garden into an encroaching shadow known only as The Darkness. Every night it creeps closer, consuming everything it touches. Soon, there will be no dawn at all.
Lumen is the last firefly — a small beetle with a fading glow that grows dimmer each day. Alone, their light isn't enough to push back The Darkness. But an old legend speaks of three Glow Stones — ancient artifacts scattered across the dying garden that hold enough power to reignite all the lost fireflies at once. Lumen cannot retrieve them alone.
Stinger, a scorpion warrior whose grandmother was taken by The Darkness, knows the locations of the Glow Stones from childhood stories. Roach, an impossibly tough cockroach who has survived everything the garden has thrown at him, provides the muscle. Together, this unlikely trio journeys through the Twilight Meadow, the Forgotten Pond, the Dead Oak, and finally into The Abyss itself — where The Darkness waits.
Last Firefly is a story about light and loss. About what happens when hope is reduced to a single flickering flame, and whether three small bugs can carry that flame through the darkest places in the world. The answer, as always, depends on how hard they're willing to fight for it.
Gameplay Guide
Party Roles
- Lumen 🪲 (Light Mage, 90 HP, 24 Magic) — The party's magical powerhouse. Lumen's Light magic is devastating against shadow-type enemies and is essential for the final boss. Fragile but irreplaceable
- Stinger 🦂 (Warrior, 140 HP, 22 Attack) — The physical damage dealer with solid HP. Stinger excels against armored enemies that resist magic. His attacks hit hard and his defense keeps him standing
- Roach 🪳 (Tank, 180 HP, 14 Defense) — The wall. Roach absorbs hits with the highest HP and defense in the party. His damage output is low, but his survival keeps the team alive through attrition fights
Combat Mechanics
Last Firefly adds two unique combat systems not found in other Arcade Surge RPGs:
- Guard — A defensive option that halves incoming damage for that hero's turn. Essential for surviving boss AoE attacks
- Critical Hits — Every attack has a chance to deal double damage. The RNG can swing fights dramatically in your favor
- Weakness System — Shadow enemies take extra damage from Light magic; armored enemies take extra from physical attacks
- Glow Shards — Golden collectibles found on maps that heal the party when collected, rewarding exploration
Boss Encounters
- Shadow Moth King (Twilight Meadow): Weak to Light. Have Lumen spam magic while Stinger and Roach guard or heal
- The Leech King (Forgotten Pond): Weak to Physical. Stinger is your MVP here — Lumen should focus on healing
- Bark Beetle Horde (Dead Oak): No specific weakness. High defense means long attrition fight — use Guard liberally
- The Darkness (The Abyss): Weak to Light. The final boss with 200 HP and 24 Attack. Lumen's magic is the only reliable damage source — protect Lumen at all costs
Themes
Light in the Darkness
The central metaphor of Last Firefly is simple but powerful: a single light, no matter how small, is enough to hold back the dark — if it refuses to go out. Lumen is literally the last source of light in the garden, and every step of the journey is a fight to keep that light burning. The game asks what happens when you're the last one carrying hope, and whether that burden is bearable.
Loss and Memory
Stinger joined the quest because of loss — The Darkness took his grandmother, and the Glow Stones are the only way to bring light back to her memory. The game treats loss not as something to overcome, but something to carry. You don't fight The Darkness to undo what happened. You fight it so that what happened isn't the end of the story.
Unlikely Heroes
A beetle, a scorpion, and a cockroach. Not exactly the fellowship you'd choose to save the world. But that's the point — heroism isn't about pedigree or destiny. It's about showing up. Roach survived because cockroaches always do. Stinger fights because anger is easier than grief. And Lumen glows because that's what fireflies do, even when they're the last one left.
Tips
- Check enemy weaknesses — using Light magic on shadow enemies or physical attacks on armored ones deals significantly more damage
- Guard is not wasted turns — against bosses with AoE attacks, having two heroes guard while one attacks is a valid long-term strategy
- Collect every Glow Shard on the map before fighting the boss. The free healing can be the difference between victory and a game over
- Lumen is fragile (90 HP) but essential for the final boss. Keep them alive at all costs — Roach should absorb hits whenever possible
- Against The Darkness, have Stinger and Roach alternate between Guarding and Healing while Lumen delivers Light magic every single turn
- Critical hits are random but can swing impossible fights. Sometimes the best strategy is persistence — try again and the RNG may favor you
- Don't neglect Roach in combat — his 14 Defense means he takes significantly less damage, making him the ideal target for enemy attacks
