🔴 Connect Four
Drop discs to connect 4 in a row. You're red!
About Connect Four
Connect Four is a classic two-player connection game first sold by Milton Bradley in 1974. The vertical board and gravity-based disc dropping create a unique twist on traditional alignment games — you don't just choose where to place your piece, you choose which column to drop it in, and gravity determines its final position. This simple mechanic leads to surprisingly deep strategy as players battle for positional control.
Despite its apparent simplicity, Connect Four was mathematically solved in 1988 by Victor Allis, who proved that the first player can always force a win with perfect play. However, achieving that perfect play requires seeing many moves ahead, making it an excellent game for developing pattern recognition and strategic thinking. For most players, games remain competitive and exciting with plenty of room for creative play.
This version pits you against an AI opponent that evaluates board positions to find strong moves. The AI provides a genuine challenge while remaining beatable with smart play, making it perfect for honing your Connect Four skills at any time.
How to Play
Players take turns dropping colored discs into a 7-column, 6-row grid. Discs fall to the lowest available position in the chosen column.
- Click any column to drop your red disc into it
- Discs stack from the bottom up — you cannot place above an empty space
- Connect 4 of your discs in a row horizontally, vertically, or diagonally to win
- The AI plays yellow and responds after each of your moves
- If all 42 cells fill without a winner, the game is a draw
- Click New Game to reset the board and start fresh
Tips & Strategy
- Control the center column — it participates in the most possible four-in-a-row combinations
- Build threats in multiple directions simultaneously. A double-threat (two ways to win) is almost always unstoppable
- Think about what your move enables for your opponent. Avoid placing a disc that gives them a critical setup
- Try to occupy lower cells in the center before your opponent does — higher pieces depend on support below
- Count ahead: if completing a row requires a cell in a specific position, make sure you'll be the one who gets to fill it
- Watch for diagonal threats — they are harder to spot than horizontal or vertical ones
