2048
Use arrow keys to slide tiles. Combine matching numbers to reach 2048!
About 2048
2048 is an addictive sliding puzzle game created by Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli in March 2014. Built over a weekend as a personal project, it went viral almost immediately, attracting millions of players within days. The concept draws inspiration from earlier sliding-number games like Threes!, but its elegant simplicity and free-to-play nature helped it reach a massive global audience.
The beauty of 2048 lies in the tension between short-term merges and long-term planning. Every swipe reshapes the entire board, and a single careless move can leave you boxed in with no way to combine your highest tiles. The game rewards spatial thinking, patience, and the discipline to maintain a consistent strategy even when tempting merges appear elsewhere on the grid.
This version runs entirely in your browser with smooth animations and swipe support for mobile devices. Your best score is saved locally so you can always try to beat your personal record. Many players find 2048 meditative once they internalize the core strategies — and reaching the elusive 2048 tile for the first time is a deeply satisfying milestone.
How to Play
Use your arrow keys (or swipe on mobile) to slide all tiles in one direction. Every tile on the board moves as far as it can in the chosen direction.
- When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one tile with double the value
- After each move, a new tile (2 or 4) appears in a random empty cell
- The goal is to create a tile with the number 2048 — but you can keep playing beyond that
- The game ends when no more moves are possible (no empty cells and no adjacent matching tiles)
- Plan ahead: once the board fills up, you need adjacent pairs to survive
Tips & Strategy
- Pick a corner and keep your highest tile there — most top players use the bottom-left or bottom-right
- Avoid pressing the direction that pulls your big tile away from its corner (typically avoid Up if your tile is in the bottom corner)
- Build a descending chain along one edge: e.g., 512 → 256 → 128 → 64 in a row
- Keep the board as empty as possible by making merges that cascade into each other
- When stuck, focus on combining small tiles to free up space rather than chasing big merges
- The 4-tile appears 10% of the time — factor this randomness into your planning
