Pong holds a legendary place in gaming history as one of the very first arcade video games, released by Atari in 1972. Created by Allan Alcorn as a training exercise assigned by Nolan Bushnell, the game was so compelling that the first prototype — installed in a bar in Sunnyvale, California — broke down within days because its coin box overflowed. Pong single-handedly launched the commercial video game industry and established Atari as a cultural force.

How to Play

Control the left paddle to bounce the ball past the AI-controlled right paddle. First to score wins the point.

• Move your paddle up and down using the arrow keys or W/S keys
• On mobile, touch and drag on the left side of the screen to control your paddle
• The ball bounces off the top and bottom walls and off both paddles
• Where the ball hits your paddle determines the return angle — edge hits create steeper angles
• The ball speeds up slightly with each paddle hit, making rallies increasingly intense
• Score a point by getting the ball past the AI's paddle on the right side
• Click Start Game to begin a new match

Tips & Strategy

• Angle your returns using the paddle edges — steep angles are much harder for the AI to reach in time
• Return to center position after each hit. This minimizes the distance you need to travel for the next return
• Anticipate rather than react: watch the ball's trajectory early and start moving before it arrives
• As the ball accelerates, focus on positioning well in advance rather than last-second saves
• Sharp angles toward the corners are the most effective scoring shots since the AI has limited movement speed
• Stay patient during rallies — the AI will eventually be caught out of position at high ball speeds
